In Which I Discuss Things Done and Songs Played in Summer

Hi guys! It’s October and guess what! I actually kinda like fall. I always am sad to see summer go and then fall comes and I remember it’s not so bad. And then winter comes and… sigh. But! It’s not winter yet.

Anyway, liking fall aside, I still love summer and this summer was amazing! I’ll be sharing some snippets of what I did this summer as well as the songs I really liked this summer.

Shall we begin?

Wish You Pain – Andy Grammer

It’s hard to say
But I wish you pain

I love you more than you could even know
Been here before and I just wanna see you grow

Clara suggested this song to me when we did our playlist swap and I reeallly loved it (and still do!). This was probably my first favorite song of the summer.

We didn’t do a ton of pond swimming this summer, but we did do some with our cousins. It resulted in gum getting stuck in Jianna’s hair which led to a traumatic mouse adventure. Fun times!

Passion Fashion – Judah & the Lion

I like good things, focused on the positive
I’m emotional, I’m a stubborn optimist
All this hatin’, people make me want to throw up
All these fake people got me screaming, “Grow up!”

This one I had heard a couple of times before but I started liking it more this summer. It’s a good summery song. πŸ™‚ Unfortunately it is rather hard to pick favorite lyrics from!

I did lots of work on my Etsy shop this summer! I won’t spend too much time on it, but you can check out the shop and the website and the instagram to see what I’ve been up to. πŸ™‚

I See Fire – Ed Sheeran

And I see fire burn auburn on the mountain side

Yay for The Hobbit! Again, not a new song, but one I liked a lot this summer. I want to learn to play this one whenever I learn guitar. Anyway, this was in the credits of the second Hobbit movie and please someone tell me if you’ve seen the commercial at the very end of those movies. It’s bizarre. (It might be the LotR movies actually?)

The Cure for Pain – Jon Foreman

And heaven knows… heaven knows
I tried to find a cure for the pain
Oh my Lord, to suffer like you do…
It would be a lie to run away

Jon Foreman’s lyrics are amazing both in his own songs and in Switchfoot songs. I’ve heard all of Switchfoot’s songs, and most of them I’ve heard a LOT but I realized I hadn’t heard all of Jon Foreman’s songs so I listened to more of those this summer. This one is probably one of my top three of his, if not my most favorite.

Three cheers for The Smile Project!

Somehow You really love who I really am
I push You away, still You won’t let go
You grow Your roses on my barren soul

This song is marvelous!! And I love the vocals in it too, Bear Rhinehart’s singing style might be my favorite. I listened to this one way too much after they first released it, and I’ve gotten slightly tired of it. But it was worth it! πŸ™‚

summer wrap up 2020 (4)

One Last Time (from the musical Hamilton)

Mr. President, they will say you’re weak
No, they will see we’re strong
Your position is so unique
So I’ll use it to move them along
Why do you have to say goodbye?
If I say goodbye, the nation learns to move on
It outlives me when I’m gone

I’m sorry guys, I LIKE HAMILTON. I’ve disappointed the old me. Granted, I don’t love it quite as much as I did the first time I watched it, and it would be so much better without all the language. But it’s a pretty amazingly done story and George Washington is amazing. Anyway, this song is clean!

summer wrap up 2020 (14)

Ain’t no gift like the present tense
Ain’t no love like an old romance
Got’sta make hay when the sun is shinin’
Can’t waste time when it comes time to dance

My favorite NTB song and one I really liked this summer! It’s one of my all-time favorites as well. And it’s quite summery! It plays through my head a good bit when hay is being made on the farm.

Unrelated to this photo, but we continued having outdoor church this summer and only got rained out once! It was quite the blessing! And now we’re moving into a building because of lifted regulations – huzzah! – and cold.

The Funnyman’s Smile – Michael McCormic Jr.

‘Cause all the times you made me smile,
Now they feel a little colder.
To know that when life knocked you down,
You cried on your own shoulder.

This is one of the best songs I’ve found through Spotify’s Discover Weekly. The lyrics! The music! It sounds kinda like a musical song somehow, but I still really like it. And I want to get one of my piano-playing siblings to learn it, hehe.

There were so many mushrooms in August. And now there’s these giant puffy ones that are amazingly fun to squish, especially with barefeet. I highly recommend the experience.

Swim Good – Switchfoot (Cover)

What if who I hoped to be was always me?
And the love I fought to feel was always free?

Switchfoot released an EP of covers this summer and for some reason I didn’t really listen to it. Maybe because I mainly love Switchfoot for their own lyrics? But I finally listened to it and I should have known they would have covered songs with great lyrics too! This one is my favorite of the ones they covered, originally done by Jon Bellion. Go listen to it, it’s great!

This was taken shortly after I stumbled upon a bunch of deer eating soybeans. (Bad deer!) It was pretty cool – they just went on eating and looking warily at me while I stood as still as possible and let the mosquitoes consume me. πŸ˜€

Yeah, I know too much, I think I know my way around
Too smart to feel a heartbreak now, too old to let my safeguards down
And where’d the wonder go? Traded magic for a measured hope
Traded dreamin’ for a worn out road, I’m tired of bein’ in control

Oh look, another NTB song! They released a new album this summer which was super exciting, and I think this is my favorite song, at least lyric-wise (I also really like Alive, more for the music).

Well, that turned into mostly music with a few snippets of what I did. Oh well! I hope you enjoyed that and I hope you gave a few of the songs a listen. If you’ve heard any of them, which ones are your favorites? Have you gotten gum in your hair? Does squishing puffy mushrooms sound fun to you? (A bunch of them got mowed, sadly, and they look really gross when they’re splattered and dried. Should’ve squished them when I had the chance.)

Have a great fall you guys! Thanks for sticking around to read my inconsistent posts. πŸ˜€

  1. For just a moment, I was very concerned about your safety from the deer-eating boybeans. Until I realized they were deer, eating soybeans. XD Yay for song recommendations! I’ve only listened to a few of these before. (And yay for Hamilton! πŸ˜‰)

  2. I LOVE NEEDTOBREATH TO!!! My favorite song from the album that you kept mentioning is Mercy’s Shore. Do you like that one? I am actually listening to to NEEDTOBREATH right now!

    1. Huzzah! That’s great! Yeah I do like Mercy’s Shore, but maybe not as much as others because I thought it sounded kinda similar to lots of other songs. Yay for NTB though, I’m so glad you like them too!

  3. Aaah I see Fire is so good!! (The artist not so much… :p) And the Funnyman’s Smile does sound like a song from a musical…hm.
