Hey guys!
I hope you’re having a wonderful Friday. First off, my sister Allison’s birthday is today, so go tell her happy birthday on her blog!
Alright, now we can proceed. Today’s post is inspired by the collab that Sarah and Kenechi did! (Click on their names to see those posts.) My friend Clara and I decided to copy their rather wonderful idea and swap playlists with each other. She gave me fifteen songs to listen to, which I’m “critquing” here, and I gave her fifteen songs that she’ll be discussing on her blog. I’ll link to her post at the end.
I also decided to try making some lyric photo edit thingies! They were quite fun to make, although my lettering is a bit bumpy. I don’t have the stabilizer thing in my old version of photoshop, so it was slightly difficult. But again, quite fun and I like how most of them turned out. 🙂 Each one has one of my favorite lyric segments of the song.
Also, all these songs are clean except one with one small curse word so feel free to listen along! (I’ll warn you when the not-completely-clean song is coming.)
Wish You Pain – Andy Grammer
Ooooooh. This one is amazing!! I love the lyrics, how they make you stop and listen. You can’t just tune them out like you can with lots of songs. And as awful as the title sounds, I like how this is a hopeful song in an unexpected way. 🙂 While I wouldn’t necessarily want someone to sing this song directed to me, it’s a great perspective – “your heart it grows, every time it breaks.” Also I like the music. It’s the type I get tired of pretty quickly but for now I love it. In fact, I think it’s my new favorite song! Or at least the listen-to-it-far-too-often-til-you’re-tired-of-it favorite song. 🙂
Carried Me With You – Brandi Carlile
Not my most favorite as far as the music goes. A bit too country or something? The lyrics are good but a bit repetitive. I feel like this song would be good if you really related to the lyrics but otherwise it’s nothing too special in my opinion. I think it would be neat in the movie though, and I might like it more if/when I watch Onward.
I do like how the song is “built” though, with both I’s and you’s and we’s:
I’ll see us through the thick and thin
…
You picked my heart up off the ground
…
And we’re never givin’ up without a fight
Our Town – Trampled By Turtles
What a strange band name and what a great album photo choice! I don’t love the music style again but the lyrics make up for it, and it fits well with the lyrics so overall I like this song. I love these kinds of lyrics, where they tell a story and paint pictures. The music is sort of nostalgic sounding so I think that’s why I like it in this song, because the lyrics are also nostalgic in a way. Also it’s quite long but I actually didn’t mind.
Colors – Black Pumas
I like the start of this one! I love building music. But then it gets pretty repetitive which I like in some songs but not so much in this one. The lyrics are pretty neat here, it’s fun to hear how they use different colors in the song, but I think I would prefer them with different music.
Renegades – X Ambassadors
This is my favorite type of beat in songs! The clapping sort of rhythm. This is repetitive too but with this music I don’t mind it so much. The lyrics don’t have a lot of wow to them, it feels like the type of song lots of other people write, but the music is fun! This seems like a good road trip song.
I do get a bit annoyed by the “all hail the outlaws” and “our time to break the rules” lyrics in songs sometimes, but oh well. And I like the hey hey hey part! It’s SUPER catchy and has been going through my head the whole day.
Sigh. Just ignore the fact that I forgot the “s” on Ambassadors on this graphic.
Sounds Like Hallelujah – The Head and the Heart
This song is definitely unique with all the different changes in the tune. I think the third section is my favorite. I like the “sounds like hallelujah” part of the lyrics, and the music has the beat I really like. But the lyrics of the first part are great too, I like the pictures in them, especially
“I’m just waiting on the sun
To close his eyes and call the night
So we can put all our differences aside”.
The Wine We Drink – Drew Holcomb & the Neighbors
I feel like this is the type of song that gets better when you listen to it several times. That’s often the way slower songs are for me.
There are several little lyric snippets in here that make me smile which I always love in songs. As for the music, this is the type of music I like when I’m tired or don’t have much energy or just want soft background music, so while I wouldn’t say it’s my favorite style I do like it if in in the right mood for it.
There are so many good lines in this one! Including this one:
All the Best – John Prine
I don’t really
Like this song
Because the words don’t ever change
And they always
Are in the same
Rhythm which gets pretty tiring.
Hehe. Yeah I don’t like the… monotonous? way he sings it. This song seems very bluegrass-y or country which, again, I don’t love. The lyrics are alright but I think I’d rather read them than listen to them in this song.
99 Red Balloons – Sleeping At Last (cover)
I’ve heard this song, but not covered by Sleeping At Last. I love this song, how it tells a story, paints pictures, and has very unique lyrics. The music style is soft and pretty, not usually my top pick, but it’s good tired music. 😀 I like how he sings it too, it’s fun to hear how he changes it up and gives it a different feel. I think this one is best to listen to if you’ve already heard the original version, but maybe that’s just me.
Wars – The Strumbellas
Ooh! I love the music! And I like the way he sings. This is a fun happy song. Again, sort of road trippy!
Tell It Like It Is – The Arcadian Wild
This one doesn’t have my favorite beat but I love it nevertheless, hehe! I like all the different instruments in it. And I love the lyrics, especially “every time i try to let you know what i’ve been thinking, what i’ve been thinking turns out to be wrong”. Also I love the tune of the chorus, which actually does have the rhythm I like. I think. And I love the overall theme of the song, tell it like it is.
Traveling Alone – Jason Isbell (small curse word here)
Nope still not a fan of Jason Isbell. XD I don’t know what it is exactly but yeah I don’t love this song.
Caution – The Killers
This one is so-so. Its not my favorite music style but I don’t hate it. I like the burn it to the ground lyrics, just the way they work in the song.
Time Stands Still – Nathaniel Rateliff
This song doesn’t have quite enough variation for me but it’s not too bad. I like how he foreshadows the chorus in the first stanza.
Also I forgot to make a graphic for this one, sorry Nathaniel.
In the Light – The Lumineers
Hey I like this one! I like how it starts. It progresses rather slowly though. And okay it’s pretty all-the-same but somehow I like it. XD At least the way he sings the lyrics isn’t the same as tons of other songs, maybe that’s why I don’t mind it.
That concludes Clara’s playlist, and my thoughts on it! 🙂 I hope you enjoyed this and maybe got some new music suggestions! If you want to see my playlist and what Clara had to say about the songs, go check out her post right HERE. That playlist doesn’t consist of my top favorite songs, because Clara has heard (or suggested to me) most of those. But I did manage to find fifteen I like that she hasn’t heard! Okay, make that fourteen. One of those songs I do not like. But it’s amusing.
Have a great rest of your week guys!
favorite song at the moment?
what song is stuck in your head right now?
Fun post! A playlist swap collab is such a great idea. I will have to check some of these songs out! Hmmm, favorite song at the moment? That is hard. Maybe “Everything’s Gonna Turn Out Right” by The Detty Sisters or “I’m in a New World” by the Nunn Sisters. I don’t know; it’s difficult to choose! However, a song that has been stuck in my head is “Living in the Rhythm” by L2M (a clean, girls group. My sister and I heard about them through a show we used to watch). Music is so much fun!

I glad you guys did this, I I did indeed get new songs to listen to! 😀

This is really such a cool idea. I loved reading this. 😀 I am really enjoying listening to TobyMac’s ‘The Lost Demos’; his newest album. My favorite song off of it is either ‘The Real You’ or ‘Fighting For Your Heart’. All of the songs are so good; it makes me wonder why he didn’t put any of them on his official albums! 😮

I’m listening to Fighting For Your Heart right now! I don’t really like it to be honest but it’s fun to listen to some new TobyMac music since I used to listen to him a lot. 😁

Oh my goodness, I remember sending Clara the link to I Wish You Pain and being like, “the first time I heard this, I just had to stand there with my mouth wide open.” Because… it really does sound awful, at first, but then it totally ISN’T, and–It blows my mind?
Also, your lyric art = goals. The Colors one is my favorite.
And, Trampled by Turtles is a crazy band name–the mental image there… I just— how could you lie still long enough to let that happen?

What a fun collab! I’m very picky with my music and tend to steer clear of a lot of these kinds of styles, but I LOVE Renegades! One of my favorites, and I still want to choreograph a dance to it 😍

Yeah! It reminded me of our music reviews in our letters. 😁 Ooh yay! And ooh again, it does seem like a great song to dance to!

Also *celebrates because I found a Lumineers song that you liked* 😀 Hey, have you heard Holdin’ Out by them? I feel like I’ve recommended it before but maybe not. This was such a fun collab to do and I loved reading your thoughts on everything. 🙂
