Gathering Gourds

Howdy.

In my last post, I talked about how the gourds had abandoned us. If you read my post right after I published it, then you probably are still thinking they are bad gourds. But they aren’t all that bad, after all. I checked on them a little after I published the post to see if some of the blossoms had produced a gourd or two. To my surprise, the plant had grown a whole lot in the last month, and there were quite a few gourds. Today my brother and I gathered them and set up the gourd stand.

We got a big bucket, pants and tennis shoes, and gloves. You have to walk through a lot of brush and then the gourd stems are super prickly.

We drove the three-wheeler through the field up to the soybeans. It’s annoying to walk through all the soy beans, but I don’t think dad would like it if we smushed his beans. 😛 XD

Finally we got to “the island.”

This is what the gourd “patch” looks like. Burdock, tall grass, pines, and gourd vines. (Haha. I’m a poet and I didn’t even know it.)

Caterpillar.

(Yuk, bad lighting.) The gourds are just hanging off the vines, but you have to knock away lots of brush to get to them.

Sometimes you have to crouch down to get a better view. Comment if you spotted the gourd that’s in this picture. 😛

In the process, lots of burrs got stuck on my pants, shirt, shoelaces, and loves. I’m assuming my hair snagged some too…

There are lots of varieties of gourds. (My gloves make it look like they are toxic or something. XD)

When we’d gathered all the gourds we could find, we headed back through the brush, and back to the three-wheeler.

We have a little picnic table that we put down by the road. Then I wrote the sign and got a container for the money, while Jeff set up the gourds.

Now we just need some customers. 😛

So that’s how we gathered gourds! 🙂 I think we have around 35 gourds on that picnic table, and there’s maybe ten more at the island that we will pick when they’re big enough.

Thanks for reading!

  1. Oh neat!! Those gourds are really cool! Good luck selling them! If you get the chance, will you tell us how the sale went? Glad they weren’t so mean to you after all XD. I’d like to buy one… Except for the fact that I probably live forever away from you… o_O 😛 hehe, I guess I can’t buy one then…

  3. That’s really neat! I’m glad the gourds decided to cooperate. 😛 I wish we could sell flowers or something…. but hardly anyone ever comes up and down our road. :/

    1. Nope! Thankfully. 😉 Yes! That was the one. Good job. 😛
Thank you! Hmm… we don’t know yet. 😀 We might buy tons of water balloons to have a balloon fight, but we’d have to wait a while since it’s getting cold already 😛
